Earlier this year while I was out exploring, I stopped by the beautiful Barfield Mill Pond. I had been there many years before and wanted to get some updated pictures of the old mill. Located off the backroads in Camden, SC, it’s not the easiest place to spot. There are no markers, and the address is not exact, but with a watchful eye you can see it sitting just off the road.
There’s not a lot of information on Barfield Mill Pond itself. It dates to the early twentieth century. There is another structure to the left of the mill known as the miller’s house. The front part of the house was used as a general store and the family that owned the property lived in the back part of the house. The old mill house has been done in by the elements and is beyond repair. The historic complex sits on the edge of a millpond. It’s a prime example of an early gristmill. I’m sure at one time it was thriving with activity.
It was a very beautiful summer day when I stopped by. There is a fence around the property, but the gate was open. The sound of the water cascading down into the creek below was such a peaceful, soothing sound. You can almost envision a time when it was bustling with life. From the outside, the mill appears to be in somewhat decent condition. Though it wasn’t possible to go inside the old mill, I was able to get plenty of pictures. I’ve posted some of these below.
I wish I could’ve found a little more history for you on Barfield Mill Pond, but there just wasn’t a lot out there. If you find yourself in the Camden area, this is a great little spot for a quick visit. I can only image how beautiful it is in late autumn when nature is showing her beautiful colors to everyone. I hope you enjoy the nature photos I took below. As always, they are available for purchase in many different print options. If you don’t see a buy button below the photo, just head on over to my Photo Collections where you’re sure to and find what you need. Thanks so much for taking the time to read about my adventure at the Barfield Mill Pond. I hope you have a fantastic day!
