Our third stop of the day at Caesars Head State Park left us wanting more. It was still early afternoon, and we had several hours of sunlight to revel in autumn’s magical colors. We passed Bald Rock Heritage Preserve on our way up and decided that would be our next destination. So, after lots of photos, we hopped into the car and descended the ever so steep and winding Geer Highway.
Bald Rock Heritage Preserve is located about five miles back down Geer Highway on the left. There is limited parking and as stated earlier, the road is full of curves, so caution should be taken when pulling off to park.
Once safely parked, you’ll notice a wooden footbridge. This bridge leads to a huge rock outcropping that provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and foothills. Most notably, the granite dome of Table Rock can almost always be seen off to the right. And on clear days the view stretches for miles, providing visitors with an opportunity to see Paris Mountain and buildings in downtown Greenville as well.
As we walked out onto the rock outcropping, we were overtaken by the mesmerizing view. Fluffy clouds floated across the captivating, colorful mountain and foothills below. Their shadows, cast down into the valley, contrasted well with the spectrum of autumn colors intermingling with the green hues of evergreen trees. The haze from earlier had all but dissipated, and at this elevation, the temperature was much more to our liking. All in all, a peaceful and serene scene.
One other thing to note, and impossible to miss, is the sheer amount of graffiti covering the rock outcropping. Most of it is young couples expressing their love for one another or cute little drawings, but some of it is offensive. Below, you’ll find a photo of one of the more artistic ones. Although it can be thought of as a form of art, graffiti is illegal. Currently, the SCDNR is working with Friends of Bald Rock volunteers to clean up litter and remove the graffiti.
If you’re planning on a trip to Caesars Head, be sure to allocate a little time for Bald Rock Heritage Preserve. You’ll be passing right by, and the breathtaking panoramic views make it well worth the stop.
