There’s nothing quite like an adventure down to the low country in early April to shake off the lingering effects of winter. With the sun starting to rise a little earlier and set a little later, it allows for more spectacular photo opportunities. And Lake Warren State Park would afford us plenty of these moments.
Lake Warren State Park would be our fifth stop of six on a very adventurous day. Unfortunately, three of our first four stops were a little disappointing, but this wouldn’t be the case here.
It was mid-afternoon when we arrived on the scene. The sun was high in the sky, there was a slight breeze and despite a chilly start, it was quite comfortable. With backpacks in tow and cameras in hand, we were off to explore the park’s two short nature trails.
The first trail took us through a mixed forest of mostly hardwoods and down along Lake Warren. The Spanish Moss glistened in the afternoon sun, adorning the trees like the tiara of a bride to be, reminding us that we were in the low country.
As we approached the lake, its deep blue hue stood out like a sore thumb. Coupled with the rhythmic rippling effect on the water’s surface, we couldn’t help but find ourselves mesmerized.
Jutting out from the bank were two fishing piers, one leading out to a beautiful gazebo. This gazebo would make for some stunning photos, contrasting well with the deep blue hue of Lake Warren.
Next, we made our way over to the second trail. Located across the main park road, it too works its way through a mixed forest of hardwoods and pines. However, this trail provides several access points to a beautiful fishing pond.
The pond was covered with an amazing amount of water lilies, many of which were in full bloom, while others weren’t very far behind. As you’ll see in the pictures below, they made for some great color, as well as monochrome photos.
On the opposite bank of the pond, we witnessed a blue heron fishing for a late afternoon snack. Unfortunately, other than a small gator that dipped below the water’s surface, we would see no other wildlife.
Lake Warren State Park is a great place for a day trip or weekend getaway. Besides the two nature trails, lake and fishing pond, it also has a playground, picnic shelters and even offers Jon boat rentals. It’s also a great place for birding. Its diverse habitats attract barred owls, bald eagles, ospreys, swallowed-tailed kites and a variety of hawks. And as mentioned above, herons. So, if you find yourself near Hampton, SC, check it out.
As for us, we were off to our next and final stop of the day, The Old Sheldon Church Ruins. Be sure to check out those photos too, you won’t be disappointed.
