A few months ago, while down in the low country on an adventure, we made a stop at the Cypress Wetlands in Port Royal, South Carolina. Filled with wildlife and lush vegetation, you wouldn’t expect to find it nestled right off a main road and surrounded by a neighborhood, but yet there it was.
It was approaching dusk when we arrived. With the sun setting in the background, it cast a beautiful glow across the marshy pond, lighting up its magnificent features. To the right, a boardwalk meanders its way around the southside of the pond, offering amazing views of the water and its inhabitants.
We immediately came across a few squirrels having a late afternoon snack. One on a fence post with Spanish moss dangling in the background, another on a thick vine, in deep thought.
As we continued along the boardwalk we were treated to the site of hundreds of coastal birds, who apparently come to roost at night after a long day of hunting and gathering. Mostly egrets, but blue herons, brown pelicans, cormorants, and several smaller seabirds as well. I’m not fluent in bird speak, but I can certainly attest that they were having a very animated and loud discussion!
Besides the birds and squirrels, we also saw a few turtles and several alligators basking along the bank and swimming. All coexisting as if one big happy family.
The boardwalk turns into a sidewalk on the east side of the pond and acts as a barrier to the surrounding neighborhood. It’s quite fascinating that there are no fences or other structures in place with apex predators such as alligators lurking about. There are however several signs warning that alligators live in the area and to proceed with caution.
With darkness rapidly approaching, we decided to wrap up this little adventure, but not before we took lots of pictures which you will find below. All these photos, as well as any others you see on my webpage are available in a variety of printing and digital downloadable options. You can even send a free eCard to a friend. Pretty cool, huh?
