Last Monday we had Georgia on our minds as we headed out early for another exciting adventure. Our first stop would be the Augusta Riverwalk. Located along the Savannah River in downtown Augusta, it sits on top of and beside the city’s levee. It affords beautiful views of the river and has several other points of interest, including the Fifth Street Marina, the Morris Museum of Art, the Augusta Riverfront Center, the historic 6th Street Railroad Bridge and an 1800 seat amphitheater. There’s even a children’s playground and a few gardens. For an area that only encompasses about a mile, they sure make the most of it.

We rolled up on the scene around 9:30. Being a Monday and late January, we pretty much had the riverwalk to ourselves. It was a bit chilly, but the sun was shining, and we were ready to take some memorable photos and enjoy our first stop of the day. We headed towards the marina side first. A multitude of sailing and fishing boats lined the pier. The very last boat, a beautiful red and white fishing boat, had an anhinga waterbird sitting on the stern with its wings spread wide, as if it were on guard. There, we were able to get some great photos of the Gordon Hwy bridge, clouds and pier posts reflecting in the Savannah River.

As we continued along the riverwalk, we came upon the historic 6th street railroad bridge. Such a magnificent structure. This drawbridge was built in 1912 to replace the 1853 South Carolina Railroad bridge and connects North Augusta to Augusta. The span no longer opens for boats, but at one time it was fully functional and I’m sure quite the sight to see. One things for certain, it made for some stunning pictures as you’ll see below.

Along with the bridges, boats, and awesome views of the river, we also came across a turtle, ducks, a gorgeous blue heron and quite a few anhingas. Infact, the anhingas were very active and had their fishing skills on full display. You can check them out below with their prize possessions in hand or should I say beaks. Either way, pretty cool to witness.

The Augusta Riverwalk is a cool little place, I can only imagine how beautiful it is in the springtime through mid-autumn. If you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth a visit. As for us, we were off to part two of the days adventure, the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. I hope to have those pictures up soon. In the meantime, check out my Instagram page for an up-close video of a gator we stumbled across on our path, sunning on the bank of the marsh. Thankfully he wasn’t very hungry.

As always, all the photos below are available for purchase in a variety of print options. Looking for something different? Head on over to my Photo Collections, where you are sure to find a print that will look absolutely amazing in your home, office or place of business. Thanks so much for stopping by and I hope we get to see you on one of our many adventures. Have a wonderful day!
