It was a beautiful and mild autumn equinox morning, when we arrived at Edisto Island for a low country adventure. After a quick stop at Edisto Beach State Park, we decided to check out The Marina at Edisto Beach.
The marina is located on the south side of the island and is nestled in a protected cove off Big Bay Creek. More importantly, it offers direct access to the Atlantic Ocean, making it a favorite among boaters and fisherman alike. The ability to accommodate boats as long as 90 feet, and deep-water slips ranging from 12-25 foot at low tide, are just two of the many amenities that all avid boaters are sure to love.
Being late September, and still relatively early in the day, there wasn’t a lot of activity at the marina. However, there were a few boats returning from early morning fishing trips.
What immediately caught our attention was all the bottlebrush evergreen shrubs in full bloom. As we made our way over to get a closer look, we were in awe of all the butterflies. Not just any butterflies, but Gulf Fritillaries everywhere, and in full pollination mode. Their bright orange color and black markings contrasted well with the crimson-colored bottlebrush.
As we walked along the pier, a dolphin poked its snout out of the creek, as if to say hello. And as quickly as it appeared, it ducked back under, not allowing us an opportunity for a photograph. Besides the dolphin, we also spotted several horseshoe crabs, songbirds and snowy egrets in the marsh. Just another day in the low country.
Although there weren’t many boats docked along the pier, there were a few larger ones. And this lack of clutter would allow us to get some good reflection shots off the water. The same can be said of the empty slips against the background of the marsh, as you’ll see below.

As for us, we were off to the mystical and magical Botany Bay. And boy, to say the least, that was quite an interesting adventure!
