It was a cloudy humid Sunday morning when we arrived in the upstate of South Carolina for another exciting adventure. We had a busy day planned and our first stop would be Oconee Station State Historic Site.
Oconee Station was originally a military compound that was later turned into a trading post. It offers a unique look into 18th and 19th century South Carolina. Oconee Station is a stone blockhouse that served as an outpost for the South Carolina State Militia during the last decade of the 1700s. It is one of two original structures that remain at this historic site today, the other being the William Richards House. Pictures of both can be found below.
A slight drizzle of rain began to fall as we started our hike. As we descended the trail, we came upon a decent size fishing pond. A lone rowboat rested on its bank, as if patiently waiting for a fisherman to take it out on an adventure.
We continued around the pond and through the mostly hardwood forest. The majestic trees along the trail would afford us some great photo opportunities, as would the various colorful fungi and mushrooms we encountered. I can only imagine how beautiful it must be in the autumn, when the leaves are in full transition.
Eventually we would find our way to Station Cove Falls, the jewel of the site. Nestled in the middle of the forest, not quite halfway between Oconee Station and Oconee State Park, it is mesmerizing.
Here, we decided to stop for a rest and take in the beautiful nature before our eyes. The peaceful relaxing sounds of the falls, cascading down the 60-foot rockface into the awaiting mountain stream below were truly captivating. A video of the moment can be found on my YouTube channel.
After quite a few photos, and a nice snack, we took back to the trail. As we winded our way back through the forest, the sun finally made an appearance. This would allow us to get some decent cloud reflection pictures at the pond. Fluffy clouds and trees reflecting off water make for great photos. And I always do my best to oblige.
