It was a Wednesday afternoon, in mid-October, when I arrived at Price Lake. This would be the sixth, and final stop, of an incredible two-day adventure that I was partaking along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The vibrant display of autumn color throughout the mountains had been quite mesmerizing, and the fact that the season’s first snow had occurred in the higher elevations, made it that much more magical. I had not been disappointed up to this point, and nor would I be here.
As I pulled into the parking lot, I had a great sense of things to come. The leaves adorning the trees were a kaleidoscope of colors. Burnt oranges, yellows, and reds, not to mention the greens of coniferous trees sprinkled throughout, made for quite the display.
From the parking area I had a great view of the mountain lake. The fluffy passing clouds and colorful trees, reflecting in the water, were amazingly picturesque.
After a serene few minutes of meditation, followed by several photos, I took to the trail.
The trail is roughly a 2.3-mile mostly flat loop, that meanders its way around Price Lake, affording some incredible views along the way. And other than a few protruding roots, it is very manageable.
It was a bit chilly as I made my hike through the mixed forest, but as the sun’s glistening rays shone through the trees, my soul was warmed. As I continued along the trail, I came upon the first of two small wooden bridges. This white bridge, with a vibrant background of trees and colorful fallen leaves, made for some stunning photos.
From the opposite side of the lake, I was taken aback by the amazing views of Grandfather Mountain. The combination of the mountains, overhead passing clouds and colorful trees surrounding the lake, were absolutely breathtaking. With such beauty before me, I couldn’t help but be awed by nature’s amazing display.
Price Lake is located just south of Blowing Rock and just north of Grandfather Mountain on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Although swimming and motorized boats aren’t permitted, trout fishing and camping are very popular on this mountain lake. I can’t speak about the scenery year-round, but one thing’s for certain, in the autumn it is well worth a visit. Either way, you can never go wrong by getting out in nature.
