Toccoa Falls is an absolutely mesmerizing waterfall. Located on the campus of Toccoa Falls College, in northeast Georgia, it is one of the tallest freefalling waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. Measuring in at 186’, one can’t help but be captivated by its amazing beauty.
When we arrived at Toccoa Falls, the sun was high in the sky. A few fluffy passing clouds stood out against a beautiful Carolina blue sky and the temperature was all but perfect. A stark contrast from our first stop at Sadlers Creek. This would be the third and final stop of our adventurous day. After a quick hike in between, at Lake Hartwell State Park, we were excited to view this wondrous site.
The trail starts at the campus giftshop. It’s a relatively short hike, less than a quarter of a mile and for the most part flat. As we walked beside the free flowing Toccoa Creek, the sounds of the massive waterfall was like music to our ears. We rounded a short bend and there it was, in all its glory, just beckoning us to come closer.
The falls aren’t very wide, but at a height of 186 feet, it is quite an impressive display. Spilling down the jagged rockface, into the awaiting pool of water below, it presented plenty of photo opportunities.
As the boulders glistened from the afternoon sun, a rainbow formed through the mist of the falls. Seeing such a display of beauty, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the old Shuggie Otis song, “Strawberry Letter 23”.
The combination of the rainbow and waterfall made for some breathtaking photos as you’ll see below. But this wouldn’t be the last of our excitement for the day. There, to our surprise, swimming in the pool of water was a feisty little muskrat. Neither one of us had ever seen one in the wild. It seemed to be having the time of its life as it swam through the creek and amongst the rocks. It took just about everything I had to keep up with the little fella.
A short video of this cute and fun-loving muskrat can be seen on my YouTube channel. Be sure to check it out.
I hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them. All these photos, as well as any photo on my site, are available for purchase in a variety of printing options as well as digital download.
So, if you find yourself in northeast Georgia, Toccoa Falls is definitely worth a visit. You will not be disappointed. Thank you so much for stopping by. I hope you have a wonderful day!
