Over the summer I made a return trip to Goodale State Park. Located in the sandhills of South Carolina, near Camden, it is one of my favorite places to visit. It never seems to be crowded, always peaceful, and a perfect place for hiking, kayaking, and canoeing.

There are two trails within the park. The first, Big Pine Tree Creek Nature Trail winds through a forest of pines, oaks, cedars, dogwoods and more. It’s a 1.7-mile loop trail and is considered an easy hike. As you wander through this beautiful forest, you’ll come across several small wooden bridges that cross the creek. You’re sure to spot squirrels, a variety of birds and even golden orb weaver spiders. If you’re lucky, during late autumn, you may even be treated to a display of vibrant colors from the hardwoods.

The second trail, and by far the most popular, is an out and back trail that leads you along Adams Mill Pond. It is not very long at all, but well worth the effort. The pond is full of majestic Cypress trees. Closer to the bank you’ll find swamp grass, lily pads and at the right time of year, the ever so alluring water lilies. It also features a variety of wildlife, including turtles, blue herons, and egrets. And although I’ve never seen any myself, it is home to the American alligator.

My favorite time to visit is on partly cloudy days. The passing fluffy clouds and cypress trees reflecting on the pond make for some amazing photographs as you’ll see below. As you walk along the trail, the pond sits to your left and Big Pine Tree Creek meanders through the lush vegetation to your right. After a heavy rain the creek mimics the lovely, serene sound of a waterfall spilling through the rocks and it’s absolutely mesmerizing.

If you’re into canoeing or kayaking, you’ll want to explore the three-mile canoe trail that leads through the pond. If you don’t have your own, kayaks are available for rent at the park.

I hope you enjoy the photos below as much as I enjoyed taking them. As always, these, as well as any photo on my site, are available in a variety of printing options. Goodale State Park is absolutely gorgeous. I’ve met lots of wonderful people hiking and fishing along the shore in my adventures there. If you’re in the Camden or Kershaw County area, it is a must visit. Thanks so much for stopping by and visiting. Have a great day!
