Had a chance to visit Historic Yates Mill County Park yesterday. A beautiful piece of nature located in Raleigh, North Carolina. There are two main trails. Both of which provide great photo opportunities.
I started with the less traveled Creekside Trail, which led me over a couple of boardwalks, into a peaceful hidden section of swamp like forest. During my hike I came across a good bit of wildlife, including, turtles, lizards, a blue heron, a snake, tiny frogs and a very photogenic deer. Not to mention, various fungi and wildflowers. The trail is relatively short, two miles in length, and loops at the end. For nature lovers, it is a must.
Now it was time for the much-anticipated Mill Pond Trail. As the name suggests, it travels around a very beautiful pond, which is home to a good bit of wildlife itself. Half the distance of the Creekside Trail, it leads to the jewel of the park, the old mill. Yates Mill dates back to 1756. It served the community for over 200 years. Though still operational, it mainly serves as a tourist attraction. In 1974, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was restored in 2005. Definitely worth a visit.
